united docs' latest programme highlights at MIPTV 2010

Cologne/Cannes, 8 March 2010 – Several previously announced documentaries about South Africa have been completed in time for the MIPTV market. They provide unusual insights into the host country for this year’s World Cup soccer championship. The five-part road movie “In Search of Southern Africa” (5x52’) takes viewers through South Africa, Botswana and Namibia – from desert and wilderness to coastal beaches. It is a journey to the roots of mankind. “The Cape of Good Voices” (52’) invites us on an adventurous bus ride through the provinces. A diverse troupe of opera singers heads out in search of new talent for the Cape Town Opera. “Helen Zille” (52’) paints a portrait of Africa’s only white, female mayor, who has enjoyed a political career in Cape Town and has served as the prime minister of the Western Cape Province since 2009. On the 30th anniversary of the mysterious plane crash on June 27, 1980, united docs presents the documentary “The Ustica Conspiracy” (52’). The five-part documentary series “Pioneers Turned Millionaires (5x52’) is expected to be a big seller. It tells the stories of Europeans who emigrated to America and met with success there, from the makers of Levi’s jeans and Heinz ketchup to Steinway pianos and Boeing airplanes. With “Three Stars” (90’), a film by award-winning author Lutz Hachmeister, the distribution team from Cologne is offering a special highlight. The feature doc takes a look behind the scenes at top-class restaurants and offers exclusive interviews with celebrity chefs from France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, the USA and Japan.

“This year, our offerings include impressive bio-pics about international personalities and feature unusual insights into parts of the world that usually remain hidden to our viewers,” said Silke Spahr, managing director of united docs. “This year in Cannes we are exhibiting some extremely promising HD formats. We have already introduced our South Africa documentaries, which are being made available just in time for the 2010 World Cup championship. And our success stories “Pioneers Turned Millionaires” and the exclusive “Three Stars” are very popular among international broadcasters.”
