In the hot and humid climate of Cambodia, the elements continue their inexorable assault on the temple complex of Angkor Wat. The work of geologists, Professor Leisen and his wife, is therefore a race against time. The geologists, who have also worked as stone restorers on the Cologne Cathedral, have been travelling regularly to this mystical site on the edge of the Cambodian jungle for twelve years now. Under difficult climatic and working conditions, they are battling, together with a Cambodian team, to save the largest sacred structure on earth – the great temple complex of Angkor Wat, which covers a surface area of two square kilometres. The conservation of the world-famous bas-relief and the heavenly dancers, the reconstruction of the temple architecture by computer and the translation of the inscriptions by other scientists are all attempts to preserve the unique culture of Angkor and to better understand it. This documentary records the successes and setbacks in this seemingly endless struggle.
