On the treacherous waters of the powerful Irrawaddy river the luxury ship, the "Road To Mandalay", cruises through the Asiatic cultural wonderland that is Burma. The former Rhine river steamer now carries passengers on a romantic journey from the gold-bedecked temples of the old capital, Mandalay to the wondrous sight of the thousands of pagodas of Bagan. In Mandalay devoted monks wash the large statue of Buddha, a huge figure, heavy with the gold that the faithful have applied to it over the centuries. The beauty of the temples and the pagodas on the plain of Bagan is best viewed from the bird's eye position of a hot air balloon. On our journey, we also meet the people of this country, where time appears to stand still. We ask them about their joys and their worries. Any trip through Burma also involves a certain level of moral conflict. The country is governed by a military junta; a great deal of its romance stems from its lack of development.
