Highway 50 winds its way from Nevada to Utah through the wide expanses of an America that lies more than 2000 metres above sea level and is characterised by breathtaking landscapes, cowboys, herds of cattle and isolated settlements. On this lonely road, right on the state border, sits the motel called the "Border Inn", some 200 miles north of Las Vegas. With a petrol station, restaurant, motel rooms and gaming machines, the "Border Inn" is the perfect resting place for those people who are travelling through, but for those who live here it is above all the only social meeting place available to them for many miles. Denys Koyle, who has been running the motel now for more than 20 years, is the focus of the film. The filmmakers however also accompanied the brand mark inspector Chris Collis on his hunt for cattle rustlers and watched "real" cowboys as they worked. They also went on patrol with the sheriff, were guests in the homes of Mormons and Levites in Utah and visited ranchers in their homesteads.
