With a length, as the crow flies, of some 100 kilometres, the Oslo Fjord is the gateway to Norway's capital city which lies at its northern end. The fjord itself is a major transport route, provides jobs, is a residential area, an angler's paradise, a popular sailing spot and a royal island kingdom - because Norway's royal family have their summer palace here. During the holidays they live on Tjøme, one of more than 40 islands in the Oslo Fjord. Mare TV presents fjord life in all its variety. For example, eating out at "Dyna Fyr" is always an adventure. This restaurant is housed in a former lighthouse and diners must navigate the fjord to get there. Indeed many Norwegians relocate to the water completely in the summertime. In the early morning it is not unusual to see executives in pinstripe suits manning their outboard motors - taking the boat to the office. Those who don't have one can just call up one of the many water taxis. The water world has a dark side too; at the centre of the Oslo Fjord lies the prison island of Bastøy. The men who ferry the prison director from the mainland to the penitentiary are actually prisoners. Every inmate has a task: milking cows, chopping firewood or keeping the beach clean. No one has ever escaped.
