The Baltic States have a centuries-long tradition of seafaring and their rich amber beaches have been famous since antiquity. Mare TV presents sea stories from the Baltic, specifically the three fledgling states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which are blossoming again after five decades of Soviet rule. Among the dunes of the Courland Spit, Lithuania, a customs unit patrols the border with Russian Kaliningrad. The men are hunting cigarette smugglers and driving fishermen from Lithuanian territorial waters. Now and then moose are also prevented from illegally crossing the border. Since the start of the year, the handful of locals on the Estonian mini-island of Ruhnu have been sharing their island with a bear, which they presume made its way across the ice during winter. The small island community has been on a bear hunt ever since, but they do not wish to kill it, instead it will be taken alive and returned to the mainland to its own community. The historic spa resort of Jurmala is situated in the Bay of Riga, on the 'Latvian Riviera'. From the band shell the sound of summer hits ring out and the band intones ’Jurmala, Jurmala’, causing the rich Russian holidaymakers to join in loudly.
