Green, mossy countryside, ringed by volcanoes and rocky glaciers, this is Iceland – home to just 300,000 people. These are a friendly and creative people, multitalented and real jacks-of-all-trades. The small Icelandic island of Heimaey boasts one of the largest Atlantic puffin colonies in the world. For hundreds of years, it has been a tradition here that when the young birds are becoming ready to fly the island children help them with their first flight attempts and get them back on their feet again after any “crash landings”. Once a year, the sheep must be driven down from the mountains to the valleys. The sheep drive would be inconceivable without the Icelandic horses of Olafur Flosason. Flosason went from being a wild rock musician in Reykjavik to a gentle horse whisperer. The Icelandic people are very pragmatic, even though their island is seen as somewhat airy-fairy and as a home to trolls and elves. Volcanoes and geysers define the Icelandic landscape. Thus even in the colder seasons, there is still a busy beach life here. After bathing in the icy sea, you simply jump into a hot spring to warm up again. The Icelandic photographer RAX has succeeded in portraying his droll and friendly compatriots in impressive photos. In his works, the land and the people merge into a work of art – as independent as the island itself.
