Fryslân, Friislon, Fräislound, Freesland, Friesland - the landscape on the coast of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark boasts lyrical names in three languages and many dialects. Yet with all this variety - its austere beauty is common to all the Friesen regions. As is the penchant for special activities in and on the water. The oddest horserace event in the world has been held here since 1902: the Duhn Mudflat Races - with Friesens in the saddle and the sulky. The start time is stipulated precisely to the minute, so that trotters and gallopers can all reach the finish line before the tide. Friesland also has the shortest daily flight route in all of Europe, running back and forth eleven times a day between Harle and the island of Wangerooge. In bad weather the journey takes five minutes, otherwise it's faster. The daily freight includes Dutch flowers, and some islanders have their salad vegetables flown in. The high point for the pilots comes after Whitsun, when they regularly find themselves carrying seal pups that have been separated from their mothers. After touchdown, they are taken on further to the breeding station.
