Florida is a huge peninsula surrounded by turquoise-blue sea. America’s “Sunshine State” has much more to offer than water, beaches and Disneyland. In Key West, they live the Caribbean version of the "lazy American way of life” to this day. Ernest Hemingway and his wife were among the first to enjoy this luxury. In Marathon we visit the “Turtle Hospital”. Where propellers of motorboats plough through the flat water, there are often injuries. The turtles are brought to the emergency room and once they have convalesced are released back into the ocean. Our next stop is Miami: in just one hundred years, this fishing village has grown to be one of the wealthiest cities in America. Miami is home to the largest ferry terminal in the world. The gate to the Caribbean. When the first luxury liners arrive into port in the dead of night, there is at least one person who is wide awake on the quay: Belkis Ramirez will have loaded her lunch truck many hours before, providing a fast-food restaurant on four wheels. At this hour you can travel the length and breadth of the port without finding anything else to eat. From Miami we travel to Sanibel, on the west coast of Florida. More than half the island is purely nature preserve. Even the youngest residents of Sanibel take a huge interest in fish, a scientific interest. Dr. Bruce Neill runs the Sanibel Sea School. He has brought his students to the beach for a lesson and the children are very excited.
