African culture meets American luxury: the three small Caribbean islands of St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas with their Danish and African histories embody many traditions. In this feature, we discover the Virgin Islands, famed as a romantic paradise for lovers the world over. Jumping over a hand-decorated broom is an integral part of the typical sunset wedding here and is itself an ancient African custom. The quite elderly broom decorators take great pride in their traditional skills, skills that could only be practised in secret during the era of slavery. The street names and buildings on the picturesque island of St. Croix are particularly reminiscent of the Scandinavian influence on these islands. And then of course we had to investigate the secret of Caribbean rum – purely for research purposes of course!
