They grace the most beautiful of women and sometimes cost as much as the Rockefeller Centre in New York. But only a handful of people know where they come from: the black pearls of Tahiti are the "Diamond of the South Seas". This particular treasure of the sea is demanding; it will only reveal its full beauty in the clearest and most mineral-rich of waters. Consequently, Tahiti and the Tuamotu Atoll offer the best underwater garden for this expensive South Seas product that has conquered the world market over the last few years. We meet the pearl growers who were even more tight-lipped than the oysters that produce the pearls. No wonder though as everyone has their own methods, which they must carefully conceal from the competition. Growing a pearl is a painstaking process that takes almost two years. The pearl fishers are well rewarded for their labours, both with the beauty of the South Seas and the variety of its colours and fruits and with the equally bright and musical island life.
