When evening comes in St. Petersburg in the months of June and July, this does not at all mean that night will follow. The city on the Gulf of Finland is so far north that in summer it does not get dark – a dull, silvery-blue glow remains to light the sky. When the red of evening flows into the light of dawn, the white nights usher in a brief period of happiness after the long, harsh winter: Russian business people celebrate with riotous parties, wedding couples tie the knot on Wassili Island and tourists gape in awe at the unique skyline of the city on night time boat tours on the Neva. As they wander through the night, the filmmakers meet five locals who grant them a look behind the facades of the imposing palaces. These people paint a picture of the Russian city on the Baltic Sea, while simultaneously presenting a portrait of the new Russia.
