Hardly any other New York street has so many legends and memories associated with it as the "Bowery". It was a habitat for artists, prostitutes, the homeless and the eccentric. When this neighbourhood was considered a “no go area” for the police, the “Guardian Angels” were founded here; the smallest and craziest opera company in the world also has its home here as does the Bowery Poetry Club. Today the street is experiencing an upheaval like no other neighbourhood, in a New York that is increasingly dominated by money. The artists are being driven out by Wall Street yuppies, while luxury hotels with rates of up to USD 1200 per night have sprung up directly next door to old flophouses. This film presents a bizarre juxtaposition and speaks to people in whose faces and stories the history of this street lives on.
