'A piece of France has fallen into the sea and been gathered up by the English', is how Victor Hugo once described this island in the English Channel. Jersey lies only a few kilometres off the coast of France. It is a small island, but politically independent nonetheless, with its own parliament and constitution. Nature has been kind here: the Gulf Stream, which passes by the island, ensures a mild climate. The generous tax laws of the island government ensure that the wellto- do from all over the world take up residence here every year - Jersey is one of the best-known tax heavens of the super-rich. The people of Jersey have proven to be very conscious of tradition: the Islanders take great care of their quite odd idiosyncrasies and display great style even in their choice of transport. Many of them have powerful old-school motors in their garages. On a European scale, Jersey people have most cars per head of population. These motorized showpieces are part of the attitude to life on an island that knows neither unemployment nor social conflict. We accompany Stuart, a passionate vintage car enthusiast, as he drives across the island in his 1938 Austin. On the journey, the viewer gets to see the beautiful landscape, the world-famous Jersey cows and some of the practices of the Islanders, while at the same time getting a peek behind the gates and into the estates of the rich and the super-rich of Jersey.
