Many centuries ago, people believed that the Underworld described in the Odyssey was underneath Naples. In fact, the city does actually sit above a sunless metropolis. Enzo Albertini is a speleologist and is considered the undisputed ruler of this subterranean city, because he has dedicated himself wholly to it - an underworld that has lain silent for centuries and is yet very closely linked to the city above it. Albertini has discovered approximately eighty kilometres of underground routes and the city has him to thank for making the caves beneath Naples accessible at all. Twenty years ago he founded the cultural association "Napoli sotterranea", and made it his mission to open up this subterranean world which lies directly under the old city, where the Greek city of Neapolis once stood. Enzo Albertini leads us through upper and lower Naples, through catacombs and subterranean graveyards and through shafts that link the homes of the old city with the kilometre-long vaults that lie beneath it.
