Fubo Gottwald is a professional apiarist and for many years has been looking after around 100 bee colonies, which produce more than five tonnes of honey for him annually. Everyday he and his bees are hard at work harvesting the sweet gold: honey from rape, roses and cherry blossoms or from the heath. "Bees are vital for nature", he says. "Without their pollination work, the balance of our entire ecosystem would collapse completely." He sells his honey exclusively at farmer’s markets. But the beekeeper has battles on his hands too: with neighbours, who spray their fields with poisons, with thieves who once even stole an entire bee colony and with the worldwide mite pest which in the USA has been responsible for the widespread destruction of bee populations. But Fubo Gottwald generally has a solution for even these problems.
