Almost every tourist that visits Cologne will have one in their hand at some point: a miniature replica of the cathedral. But only very few know that this tourist bestseller will have travelled a long road before it reached the shelves of the souvenir shop. The tiny cathedral and other souvenirs like it are actually manufactured in a factory in Xiamen, a coastal city in the south east of the People’s Republic of China. 1.5 million people live in what is known as the “cleanest city in China”. The employers value the mild-mannered and reliable Chinese workers. Three hot meals a day and paid overtime make the demanding job very attractive. Meanwhile in the shadow of the Cologne cathedral, a Chinese tourist will delight over his keepsake miniature of the great Gothic building without suspecting that it was in fact made in China.
