Rush Hour On The Med - Between Tangier And Tarifa; Rechte: united docs

The point at which the Mediterranean is at its narrowest is always a hive of activity. In the Straits of Gibraltar only 14 kilometres separate Africa and Europe. From the surfer's paradise of Tarifa in Spain one can easily look across the sea to the Moroccan port of Tangier - and vice versa. In the summer, thousands make this crossing on the ferry every day. Both cities have always been cultural meeting points. To this day, Tangier has conserved a little piece of Europe on the African continent and has an eventful history as a metropolis of smugglers and spies - the real template for the film classic "Casablanca". After decades as a sleepy port, the city is now buzzing as a centre of trade and the preferred holiday destination for the wealthy of the entire Arab world. For centuries, Tarifa was shaped and defined by Islam, a fact easily recognisable from the cityscape. This is a small city with an international flair, thanks to the large surfer community that has settled here and to the Moroccan migrant workers in the region. The film tells the stories of people who live with and on the Med: fishermen and ferry staff, commuters who are at home on both continents, cooks and artists.
