Christopher Muthathi has made it in the new South Africa - he is a game warden in Krüger National Park. And he is the first black ranger ever to lead walking tours of holidaymakers eager to catch sight of the Big Five in the African bush. Under the old regime, this was a privilege reserved for white rangers. Armed with a rifle, Christopher leads the way through the National Park with the tourists following like a flock of newly hatched ducklings. We always have the impression of safaris that people are told to keep their distance from the big cats, elephants or rhinos. But the hikers on these tours get to see the big game up close and personal. Christopher works four weeks through and then he has a few days holiday, allowing him to immerse himself once again in his traditional, African way of life.
