They come from cold Idaho, Oregon, Utah or Wyoming, they come from many states, but they’re basically stateless. When icy winds blow across the north, America’s restless retirees migrate in their hordes to the south. Their destination: Quartzside, a dusty ghost town in Arizona at the junction of two highways between Los Angeles and Phoenix. The "Snowbirds" arrive here each year in hordes and for a short while swell the town into the second biggest "city" in Arizona. The travelling oldsters boost the population from the 2,400 who usually live there to more than a million. Among the winter wanderers is the whole spectrum of society: former managers, secretaries, construction workers. They all enjoy three months freedom, sunshine, trailer- and campfire-romance in the desert sand. The community is supplied by flying traders and motorised hair-stylists. Many travellers know each other and come every year.
