Robert digs his heels into the ground but the horse drags him effortlessly through the dust. Robert lets go of the rope, his mustang “Arista” bucks, runs away and then stops and stands. It is hard work taming a wild horse. The mustangs in the expanses of the American West are part of ancient American legend. The problem is that thirty thousand wild mustangs are on federal lands. And the number is rising. The horses must share the sparse grazing with stockbreeder’s cattle and the federal authorities have to pay for this. This year, they sent out word that thousands of the wild horses are to be put down. This announcement was met with outrage across the country. Then an idea was formulated to save them: 200 cowboys have 100 days to tame the wild horses. At the end there will be a competition in Texas, the best cowboys will be awarded a prize and the mustangs will be auctioned off. The hope is that the cowboys will boost the popularity of this adoption program. The film follows four of the participants over the months until the big finale in Fort Worth, Texas.
